5One of the few true synthetic oils
By NotSteve
You may be surprised to learn that the synthetic oil you've been using really isn't what you thought it was.

There was a time when motor oil that was labeled "synthetic" was made solely from Group IV base stock, which meant that it was either polyalphaolefin (PAO) or polyolester (POE).

Unfortunately for auto/motorcycle enthusiasts in the USA, there was a lawsuit (Mobil v. Castrol) where a judge decided that "synthetic" was just a marketing term, and it was OK for hydrocracked Group III oil to now be labeled "synthetic". If you live in Japan, Germany, or some other European countries, you have nothing to worry about as "synthetic" oil is just that.

As Group IV oil is much more expensive to produce, most makers switched to Group III base stock for their US marketed products.

Fortunately, Red Line bucked the trend and uses only POE for their oil. Sure it's more expensive, but if you have a high-performance engine I feel it's still a good value and a wise investment for your machine. This is the only oil I put in my CBR1000RR. If you ride a S1000RR, ZX-10R, GSX-R1000, YZF-R1, 1199 Panigale, RC8R, etc., you should consider Red Line. When conditions are crappy (very high/low ambient temperature, dusty roads, 180 mph run on a dry lake bed, oops-I-waited-too-long-to-change-my-oil, track day) it provides an additional level of protection.

BTW, I have nothing against Group III "synthetic" oils per se, and use Mobil 1 in all my vehicles except my CBR. And my lawnmower, too!
